His elevation to the match-day team comes after he was called into the squad last Sunday as injury cover for Francis Saili.
Second five Ma’a Nonu will take his place in the midfield alongside Conrad Smith after overcoming an ankle injury sustained while playing for his club side Oriental Rongotai last month. It will be Nonu’s 80th test and Smith’s 70th.
Prop Tony Woodcock will earn his 99th test cap, replacing at loosehead the injured Wyatt Crockett.
And with Sam Cane providing loose forward cover on the bench, flanker/lock Steven Luatua has been released to play ITM Cup footy for Auckland against North Harbour this Sunday.
Prop Joe Moody and fullback/wing Charles Piutau will also travel to Sydney with the playing squad.
