One object travelled a long way to be picked up at Makara Beach during the beach clean up.
About 80 volunteers collected a tonne of rubbish off the beach at the weekend and among the piles was a message in a bottle.
The bottle was found by Manuela Neumann and Roxy Thomas at Ohau Bay on Terawhiti Station, Makara.
The note said the bottle would be dropped in Lake Taupo, so it had travelled down the Waikato River to the sea and then down to Wellington.
It was written by a tourist and parts were hard to read because of water damage.
Therefore it is unclear where the tourist is from and when the message was dropped in the lake.
But one clear passage said the visitor had enjoyed their time in New Zealand, that it was a beautiful country and that they hoped the letter finder would use a more conventional communication method and email them.
Neumann said she would email the tourist to say she had found the letter.
The December 1 clean up at Makara Beach was part of the Sustainable Coastlines Love Your Coast initiative.
The collected rubbish included plastics, rope recovered, a $10 note and the message in a bottle.
The beach was cleaner than last year, when two tonnes of rubbish was collected.
