McKenzie promises different style than Turia
Tariana Turia’s successor is preparing to modernise the Maori Party’s relationship with voters in Te Tai Hauauru.
Chris McKenzie – who’s a political advisor to Mrs Turia at Parliament – has been chosen as the party’s candidate for next year’s election.
He says he has big shoes to fill but he’ll be shopping for a different pair.
“I’ll have quite a different style to her. I’m going to focus on relationship building and I want to bring a little bit more ‘party’ into the Maori Party. Politics should be fun, more fun than it it is, and far more engaging for young people.”
He says it’s going to be an uphill battle, as he expects something of a swing back to Labour.
“But I’m absolutely confident that not only will I hold that seat but actually I think that we must hold the seat. I think people will realise that it’s absolutely essential to have an independent Maori voice in Parliament.”
Mr McKenzie’s leaving the door open for post-election partnerships.
“I think that Maori aspiration is a destination and so I’m not too fussed on what car we take to get there.”
