The damage to historical buildings in Christchurch continues to demand their demolition on public safety grounds. The old port town of Lyttleton, now part of Christchurch City, has really lost a lot of it’s landmarks through the earthquakes, notably New Zealand’s oldest police station, built between 1880-82 and opened in 1882.
My mother was born and raised in Lyttleton, and my father further out in Banks Penisula ending up in Akaroa. They would meet, get married and have a family over the hill in Christchurch.
I wandered around the port as a youth and occasionally worked as a seagull (casual worker) on the wharves.
I really do feel sad for this great little port town, and my home town of Christchurch where I was born, raised and educated in, leaving as a 20 year old in 1964.
